Sixteen Candles
Generally, every teenager has felt the agony of the awkward girl or boy who just cannot seem to fit in or to attract the attention of a love interest. Often, these teenagers feel that they are alone in their pain, but there are many popular movies about teenage angst that are sympathetic to the horrors each teenager has either faced himself or heard about through the grapevine in school. "Sixteen Candles" is one of these movies.
Everyone can relate to the loneliness felt by an outcast, to the pain of falling in love with someone who shows no reciprocation, to the hopelessness of the epic nerd who likes a girl, the same girl who is actually in love with the most popular guy in school. All of these scenarios are played out in "Sixteen Candles," a movie released in 1984 starring Molly Ringwald as Samantha Baker, a self-conscious girl who runs into nothing but problems involving boys, family and school on her sixteenth birthday. Humorous yet bittersweet, "Sixteen Candles" plays on the insecurities and fears felt by every teenager, even those deemed "popular."
"Sixteen Candles" is one of those movies that people remember as long as they live. It brings back the memories of their teenage years with the struggles, triumphs and lessons they learned during those days of turbulence.
